Devotionals from the Book of James

Scripture to Read Today: James 1:21-25

How, then, can they call on the one they have not

believed in? And how can they believe in the one of

whom they have not heard? And how can they hear

without someone preaching to them?

Romans 10:14

In the 1980s and 1990s, most pro football fans knew at least one Bible verse reference even if they had never heard anything from or about the Bible. "John 3:16" was seen in the end zones of stadiums as kickers kicked the extra point after a touchdown or during a field goal kick attempt. Christians made large placards and held them high so that television cameras would catch the Bible reference and broadcast it to millions of viewers.

I personally know one former player for the Philadelphia Eagles who came to Christ by seeing the reference and looking it up in his hotel's Gideon Bible after the game. God used those signs in the end zones to draw people to Himself. The Gospel can be spread even in an end zone!

The key to that former pro football player, or anyone, coming to Jesus as Savior is the Gospel as it is found in God's Word. The reference on a placard was not enough - even though it pointed people to one of the most explicit statements of the Gospel in all of Scripture. I have had all kinds of people share how they think the Gospel could be better communicated than in a book from God. They suggest that sharing the biblical Gospel seems less effective than a good marketing strategy or some other modern method.

God sovereignly chose to use His Word. God breathed His truth into the Bible. The Bible is a living book that the Spirit of God uses to convict sinners and draw them to salvation found in Christ and Christ alone. His plan works. His plan is best. His plan must be our plan.

Romans 10:14 reminds us through a series of questions that for anyone to call out to God and believe in Jesus requires that someone get the Word of God to them. In one way or another, the biblical Gospel needs to be preached to them. The clouds do not spell out John 3:16. We cannot wait for an angel to appear and tell our friends and family the hope of the Gospel. We need to be a part of proclaiming it to others. We need to show it with our lives and share it with our lips.

James 1:21 says God's Word leads to our salvation. God planted it in our hearts as we expressed our faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. How can others call out to Jesus in saving faith without someone sharing the Good News found in the Bible with them? They can't!

Let's proclaim the biblical Good News found in Jesus with others! That is the only hope for anyone!
