Scripture to Read Today: 2 Peter 3:14-18
Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 3:18

Our Sunday Take5s look at the lyrics, stories, and heart behind worship songs. Today we look at the heart and lyrics behind, Zach Williams’ “Less Like Me.”
I determined early in my freshman year of college that this first year of undergraduate training would be a year of focus on letting the Holy Spirit make me more like Jesus. Don't get me wrong. During my final years of high school, I had a heart and passion to become more like Christ. My new plan upon entering college was to read a section of one of the four Gospels, look for a characteristic of Jesus, and focus on that quality for that day.
In my attempt to make it practical, I wrote down the one or two word description of the attribute of Jesus on a 3X5 index card. I then pinned that card to a prominent corner of the bulletin board in my dorm room. As I saw the index card and that day's descriptive word, I prayed and asked God to make me more like Jesus in that way.
To this day, I am not quite sure there has been any other year where God shaped my character more. Sometimes he used a fine chisel, and at other times it seemed he used a sledgehammer. It sure did deepen my heart's desire to become more like Jesus every day. While I have grown over the years, I still have a long way to go. I love the verse in Second Peter that says, "Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18).
In January, when I first heard the song "Less Like Me," I could not get enough of it. It captured that same passion - a deep desire for others to see more of Jesus and less of me. I came across a brief video of Zach Williams, the song's writer, talking about his own desire to be like Jesus. He said the song came out of a prayer and a passion he has had that friends and family would see the transformation in his life. He hoped people would notice Jesus a little more and him a little less with each new day.
What about you? None of us are perfect. Becoming like Christ is a journey that is not finalized until we are with Him in glory. But, the Holy Spirit will shape and mold us as we walk in God's Word and seek His work in our lives.
Everyone who follows Christ should say or sing daily, "A little more like Jesus, a little less like Me."
Enjoy the lyrics to "Less Like Me" by Zach Williams:
Oh, I have days I lose the fight
Try my best but just don't get it right
Well I talk a talk that I don't walk
And miss the moments right before my eyes
Somebody with a hurt that I could have helped
Somebody with a hand that I could have held
When I just can't see past myself
Oh Lord help me be
A little more like mercy' a little more like grace
A little more like kindness' goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience's a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me
Yeah, there's no denying I have changed
'Cause I've been saved from who I used to be
But even at my best' I must confess
I still need help to see the way You see
Somebody with a hurt that I could have helped
Somebody with a hand that I could have held
When I just can't see past myself
Oh Lord, help me be
A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me
Oh, I want to feed the beggar on the street
Love to be your hands and feet
Freely give what I receive
Lord, help me be
I want a friendship first above all else
Love my neighbor as myself
In the moments no one sees
Lord, help me be
One, two, three
A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, oh, a little less like me
A little more of living everything I preach
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me
Oh, a little less like me
