Scripture to Read Today: Romans 11:33-12:2

Do not conform to the pattern of this world,

but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Romans 12:2

The first eleven chapters of Paul's letter to the Romans end with a great big view of God. "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!" (Romans 11:33). Those nearly dozen first chapters of the book speak about man's sinfulness, God's great plan of redemption, and His faithfulness to Israel as a testimony of His faithfulness in our salvation. They paint a vast, awe-inspiring picture of our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer.

Based on that beautiful image of our God, Paul appeals to us to offer up our whole selves as living sacrifices to God. He says that once we understand Who our God is, we cannot help but respond with an offer of ourselves. "This is your true and proper worship" (12:1).

Through Paul's pen, the Holy Spirit tells us in chapter twelve, verse two, that we should not be conformed to this world's values, standards, and perspectives. The Phillips Paraphrase of Romans 12:2 says, "don't let the world around you squeeze you into its mold." The starting place for us to have transformed lives due to our great glimpse of God in chapters 1-11 is the renewing of our minds. Life transformation for every follower of Jesus begins with the renewing of the mind.

We begin any life-change God calls us to with a process of replacing old, sinful, un-Christlike thoughts with new, good, Christlike thoughts. As we think right, and then do right, God brings peace and satisfaction. All change begins with the battle of our minds. We must exchange arrogant, lustful, and greedy thoughts for thoughts of humility, love, and generosity.

God's Word gives us the basis of the renewal needed in our thought patterns. Meditating on and meditating over the words of Scripture can bring cleansing, healing, and change. Take the time today to meditate on something so simple as Romans 12:2. Embrace the idea that any life transformation will take place in the renewing of your mind!

As we walk with Christ, all life change begins with the battle in our minds. To change your life, change your thinking!
