Jehovah-Rophe - The God Who Heals

Day 13 of 30 Days of the Names and Attributes of God

Praise the LORD, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits—

who forgives all your sins

and heals all your diseases.

Psalm 103:2-3

When our son, Jon, fell while climbing at an indoor rock-climbing gym a few years ago, Lesli and I got that call no parents ever want to get. "Your son is on the way to the hospital in an ambulance." After back surgery that had to happen within 24 hours to prevent permanent paralysis in his legs, Jon began what promised to be a long road to recovery.

The surgery had placed 2 rods down his spine and ten 4 inch screws to connect Jon's back to the rods. X-rays taken months after the accident look like images of some cyborg. After a week in the hospital and two weeks in a physical rehabilitation hospital, the home recovery was not easy. At first, Jon used a wheelchair to get around.

Jon's doctors had told us that our early-twenties son would probably need the chair for 3-4 months and then would be using a walker and then a cane. They said he might not get to the point of improvement enough for a cane until close to nine months after his fall.

In just over a month, he no longer needed the wheelchair or a walker. He moved right into walking with a cane. He even put the cane aside in 4-5 months. His progress went incredibly quickly, beating all of the various doctors' predictions. Jon still has pain in his legs from time to time - especially when he has been on his feet for a while. Jon does still have other difficulties as a result of the fall now and then. But, overall, the effects of his injury and back surgery have been minimal in terms of what doctors suggested early in his recovery.

We know that God gave his body strength early in his recovery process. We have seen God heal our son beyond what seemed medically possible. Even with the continuing results of his fall, God showed Himself powerful. We thank God for his hand on Jon's life. Our God is truly a good God!

One of the names of God is Jehovah-Rophe, meaning "the God Who Heals." The Hebrew word "Rophe" translates to "to make whole completely, to mend and repair thoroughly." God promises that all who know Jesus will one day be healed of all physical pain and disease. Jesus will eventually make all things new as He wipes away every tear from our eyes.

The God Who heals not only restores physically, but also heals personal distress, mental anguish, deep emotional hurt, and even the wounds of our sin or the sin of others. God is a healer. He heals more than our bodies.

The most significant healing He has done for any of us is the spiritual healing He gives us through His Son. Our sins are forgiven because of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Every wound or pain in life will be healed by our God one day. We can ask God to heal us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He can choose to heal us now, or, because of His greater purpose, He may choose to heal us as when we step into His presence in Heaven. But, He will heal us.

Ask God to heal those who are suffering. Ask according to His will. If He chooses to heal now, look for a greater purpose in the healing. If He decides to wait and heal you as you enter life in Heaven, look for God's purpose in not healing you now. What else might He be doing in your life and through your life?

Our God heals. We can all find our God to be a healer in one way or another. Now or in eternity. Our God heals!
