The Most Expensive Purchase Ever

Scripture to Read Today: Ephesians 1:3-14 NLT

He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Ephesians 1:7 NLT

In 2016, the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum in Hollywood paid $4.8 million for Marilyn Monroe's "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" dress that she wore at JFK's 45th birthday celebration. The video clip of the famous starlet singing to President Kennedy remains one of the most iconic clips of either Monroe or Kennedy. The purchase by the museum cements it as one of the most expensive pieces of pop-culture memorabilia of all time.

We hear news of otherwise inexpensive items being bought for astronomical amounts of money from time to time. The thing may have little or no worth of its own, but because of who it's connected to, it becomes outlandishly expensive. Small locks of hair, half-eaten sandwiches, and nail clippings associated with someone of great fame can bring lots of cash to the seller.

The highest price ever paid for anything in world history is described in Ephesians 1:7, "God is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins." So God paid the price for our freedom and forgiveness with the blood of His own Son. When we were dead in our trespasses and sin, God paid the highest price ever for anything when we had no worth, humanly speaking. He purchased our salvation with the sacrifice of His Son.

God looked at us in our sin. He saw our lostness and inability to pay our way out of our outstanding spiritual debt. With that perspective, it's incredible that He loved us. Because of His love, God the Father sent God the Son to be your Savior and mine. No act of sacrifice has ever demonstrated such great love as what God has shown us in Christ!

While $4.8 million for a dress might seem impressive at first, it is nothing compared to the price God paid for our freedom and forgiveness. Your value and my value in Christ far outweigh anything else in all the universe. The blood of Jesus redeemed us!

When Satan slams you and tries to convince you that you are worthless, remember God paid the ultimate price for you!
